CIE's new release focuses on lighting for the elderly and low vision people

China Lighting Network recently, CIE issued a new technical report "Lighting for Older People and People with Visual Impairment in Buildings" (CIE-227), analyzes the environmental lighting on visual function (such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field And the influence of color vision, some lighting design methods for the elderly and low vision people are given in the indoor environment such as office, public places and elderly and low vision people.

When the age is over 45 years old, the light scattering in the human eye gradually increases, the spatial contrast sensitivity and the retinal illuminance gradually weaken, the dark adaptation decreases, the color vision becomes weak, and the human vision will gradually weaken. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 285 million people worldwide suffered from visual impairment in 2017, and as the global population ages (as shown in Figure 1), the social workforce is gradually aging, targeting the elderly. Lighting design for people with low vision cannot be ignored.

Percentage of aging population (over 65 years old) by country and the number of aging population expected in the future

In previous reports, CIE 123-1997 described the effects of the lighting environment on visual functions such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field and color vision, and proposed lighting design recommendations for low vision people; ANSI/IES RP -28-07 In the specific application places such as elevators, corridors, bedrooms and bathrooms, the overall lighting design scheme for the elderly is proposed; CIE 196:2011 analyzes the contrast sensitivity (CSF) calculation models of different age groups for lighting design. Engineers and engineers provide design solutions for the elderly and people with visual impairments.

Based on the existing research and combined with the current social status, this technical report has made the following improvements and improvements:

1 Reduce the age limit of the elderly from 65 to 50, and increase the lighting design requirements for the elderly and low vision people in public places such as offices;

2 The system analyzes the effects of visual functions such as illumination level, brightness contrast, disability and discomfort glare, such as contrast sensitivity and glare sensitivity of the human eye, and gives corresponding design suggestions for the elderly and low vision people. ;

3 By way of example, the design methods of lighting, color and the like in different places are analyzed more specifically.

According to the analysis of this technical report, as the age increases, although the sensitivity of the human eye to the brightness contrast of the light source and the background decreases, the increase of the intraocular light scattering directly increases the imaging size of the light source in the retina, from the uniform glare index UGR model. It is known that the larger the size of the light source, the higher the level of discomfort glare, so the higher the age, the more obvious the visual impact of disability glare and discomfort glare on the human eye. As shown in Figure 2, the brightness of the same light curtain is significantly higher than that of young people in the eyes of the elderly.

The brightness of the same light curtain emitted by the computer in the eyes of young people (left) and the elderly (right)

In addition to visual function, the human eye also has non-visual functions, and non-visual effects have an important influence on the human circadian rhythm system. The light level, spectrum, light distribution, frequency and duration of illumination of the light source all have an impact on people's mood and sleep quality. Therefore, in order to better protect the vision and physical health of the elderly and low vision people, the design of environmental lighting should consider the impact of lighting on human visual and non-visual effects.
