STMicroelectronics Introduces Galvanic GapDRIVE: New Cutting-Edge Intelligent Integrated Gate Driver

Across multiple electronic applications, the world's leading semiconductor supplier STMicroelectronics (STMicroelectronics, referred to as ST) introduced advanced single-channel gate driver (single-channel gate driver) chip STGAP1S. The new product integrates galvanic isolation and analog and logic circuitry on the same chip, helping designers simplify driver design while ensuring superior noise immunity. STGAP1S is the first product of ST's new generation of gapDRIVETM gate drivers . The new product integrates ST's unique bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) manufacturing process and innovative technology for implanting isolation layers on the chip to further increase system integration. High-voltage rails can withstand voltages up to 1500V without interfering with other circuits; high reliability makes them suitable for industrial drives, high-power 600V or 1200V inverters, solar inverters and uninterruptible power supplies .

The 100ns electrical isolation layer signal propagation delay enables the STGAP1S to transmit high precision PWM signals. The new product integrated driver stage sinks or sources up to 5A; rail-to-rail outputs support negative drive voltages, and can be used with large insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) or wide-band gaps (wide-bandgap) Power switches (such as silicon carbide MOSFETs) are used together. The new product features excellent common-mode transient immunity, withstands common-mode transient voltages in excess of ±50V/ns, and supports cross-electric isolation communication and safe working environments. The separate design of the sink and source output improves design flexibility and helps reduce the use of external components.

The new product communicates with the host controller via the built-in industry standard interface SPI port, and internal control logic monitors the operating status in real time. STGAP1S provides rich diagnostic information to the main controller through this interface to further improve system protection performance and operational reliability.

The new smart drive also integrates a number of protection features to help the chip maximize operational reliability in harsh industrial environments. These protection features include a power stage active Miller clamp that prevents unwanted transistors from turning on; a desaturation detection of the protection switch under short-circuit conditions; and prevents dangerous voltage overshoots Collector-emitter overvoltage protection and output bi-level shutdown; over-temperature protection, under-voltage protection (UVLO, Under-Voltage Lockout) and overvoltage protection ( OVLO, Over-Voltage Lockout) and over-current detection dedicated pins.

The STGAP1S is a SO24W chip with perfect integration and compact size.
