Why is the old ADAS visual platform supposed to be "retired"?

NXP Semiconductors, LG Electronics and HELLA Aglaia announced a strategic partnership in automotive vision applications. The three major automotive ADAS companies have teamed up to create an automotive vision platform that will be available to all automakers, which will save lives by detecting and classifying road-tolerant people with first-class performance. A large European OEM has adopted this new vision system.

Transformation tradition

This new vision system replaces the traditional proprietary vision platform, giving traditional and emerging technology car manufacturers more choices. The collaboration aims to promote rapid innovation in key areas of autonomous driving development and to assist the automotive industry in achieving the ambitious plans of the global NCAP standards body.

Many of today's automotive vision platforms are proprietary platforms that lack flexibility and limit automakers' differentiation in the global marketplace. Existing platforms also prevent further software integration and innovation, making it difficult for manufacturers to integrate the best sensor technology and software resources on the market. The three teams, the visual platform development led by LG Electronics, we believe that the visual platform must be open and secure, meet NCAP requirements, and be ready to achieve 3 to 5 autopilot.

The camera-based vision system was developed by LG Electronics in collaboration with NXP and HELLA Aglaia to enable the detection and classification of road-tolerant people (such as pedestrians and cyclists) and to activate the Automatic Emergency Brake System (AEB). The camera can be attached to the windshield behind the car's rearview mirror.

In addition, the system can detect traffic signs, inform drivers of speed limits, monitor and maintain lanes, and help correct steering when subconsciously shifting. NXP Vision Acceleration IP integrates HELLA Aglaia and LG's professional algorithms to enable visual ADAS applications with industry-leading performance with low latency and low power consumption.

Leading the industry

The new vision platform is designed to provide automotive manufacturers and suppliers with the technology they need to compete in the NCAP 2020 test scenario. The goal of the solution is to enhance detection and classification of vulnerable road users, reduce delays, trigger emergency braking and emergency collision avoidance in a timely manner, and provide predictive sensing for dangerous conditions such as low light and blocked fields of view. The new vision platform also paves the way for enhanced advanced features for autonomous driving and AI networking.

LG Electronics is the leader in next-generation vision processing solutions for camera systems, and key systems are key components in the autonomous vehicle and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) market. LG Electronics leverages its extensive experience in camera systems, computer vision algorithms, and electronic technology to develop existing ADAS systems to the next level. As a leading Tier 1 supplier, LG Electronics integrates HELLA and NXP's diverse vision SoCs and software and IP components to provide automotive manufacturers with a wealth of solution options.

HELLA is a leading automotive supplier active on the international stage. HELLA Group develops and manufactures lighting and electronics for the automotive market. Its Berlin-based subsidiary, HELLA Aglaia, is a global leader in the development of intelligent vision sensor systems, with strong technical capabilities in single-camera and stereo camera systems, image processing, and software programming. The company specializes in developing innovative industrial solutions and efficient products for driver assistance systems, electromigration and human flow detection.

NXP is an ideal partner in the field of automotive vision with its leading edge in vision processing technology, safety and quality. The powerful GPUs of the NXP S32V series of vision processors enable panoramic view image stitching and share the task of running advanced vision processing and machine learning algorithms to the APEX-2 engine. In low-power ADAS vision processing, the series delivers high performance at a specific power envelope (GHz/mW). It adds more functionality to the same system environment, enabling automakers and suppliers to deploy advanced inspection algorithms based on ISO26262-certified secure automotive electronics systems to reduce road traffic accidents. The NXP SoC platform is built on open software standards, making it easy for vendors and OEMs to implement their own differentiated ADAS technology.

At the just-concluded 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), NXP demonstrated the power of NXP and LG vision and radar system technology.
