Mobile phone control street lighting? Try this app

According to Reuters in street lighting engineers can now build and maintain their networks via their smartphones.

The phone app is OSRAM's Tuner4Tronic Field, using the latest Near Field Communication Protocol (NFC).

The parameters that need to be adjusted on site are light output (depending on the type of street), dimming time, and dimming level. The dimming function is also not activated depending on the specific application, such as a roundabout and a crosswalk. The luminaire manufacturer can specify which features are configured on site. They also determine the range over which the parameters can be varied to ensure reliable operation and constant output of the luminaire.

Osram product manager Carlos Rohde said, “Our application enables towns to use standard luminaires to quickly and easily meet different requirements without having to keep inventory of many different models. This saves installation, maintenance, storage and replacement. Time and cost."

The app can use the near field communication technology to wirelessly program the LED driver in the field without the need for line voltage. Can be used on any NFC-enabled smartphone. For smartphones without an NFC antenna, OSRAM offers a portable NFC scanner (essentially a Bluetooth NFC adapter) as an alternative.

As an open system, the app is available to everyone and does not link users to specific luminaire manufacturers.

With the copy and paste function in the APP, the settings of the faulty luminaire can be immediately transferred to the new luminaire. There is no need to check the configuration of the old fixture; the entire process runs offline and the user does not have to store their data in the cloud.

Another advantage of NFC is that no line voltage is required. Therefore, the original configuration of the LED driver can be recovered most likely even after the drive fails.

The app can be downloaded from OSRAM's website and is free before March 2019.
