Snow Wright Chai Guosheng: From 700,000 to 1 billion in 17 years

In order to save costs, Chai Guosheng once used rusted screws in kerosene for a few days. Today, he is one of the largest energy-saving lamps companies in China, with an annual output of 150 million energy-saving lamps.

He is known as "technical paranoia", his company has 181 domestic and foreign patents, including 32 invention patents, and won the China Patent Excellence Award in 2008.

In the early days of his business, he used to give gifts to encourage his subordinates, but he gradually parted ways with these entrepreneurial partners, even at the hesitation of the fourth largest shareholder, and introduced college students and young cadres.

From relying on Yunnan's fellow villagers to "wark the group" to let his son stay away from the company, he said that he may resign as chairman of the board in the future and only become a shareholder.

Into the office of Chai Guosheng, the reporter of the Financial Weekly was almost blinded by the antiques of the full house. The celadon vases on the high and low shelves are patchwork, and the "Haina Baichuan" strips on the wall are magnificent. The traces of the two old Taishi chairs are polished everywhere. Just like the owner of this room, after the time is washed and honed, it looks atmospheric. Calm.

The fish tank that is surrounded by many new lamps on the door is not in harmony with the old atmosphere in the house, but it is the only display in the office that can be linked to the owner's identity.

The ancient Chinese collector Chai Guosheng's job is to do the lamp, 12 years of state-owned enterprise career and 20 years of entrepreneurial experience, to create one of the best energy-saving lamp company in China. As of January 15, 2010, Chai Guosheng holds 48.66% of the shares of Shell, with a market capitalization of about 1 billion yuan.

From listening to the book to the first class

Chai Guosheng said that when he went to college, he “does not want to waste time, does not want to waste his life, does not want to be worse than others.” He spent three years studying the 9-year course from junior high school to university. When he graduated, his postgraduate results ranked in the whole class. One.

The 57-year-old Chai Guosheng was born in Yunnan, and he mentioned his own hometown. Chai Guosheng couldn’t hide his pride: “Although it’s a small place, it’s China’s tin, just like Jingdezhen is China’s porcelain. same."
Chai Guosheng was born in Shuxiangmen, and his parents are teachers. Under the influence of his parents, Chai Guosheng likes to read books from a young age. After graduating from elementary school, the Cultural Revolution broke out. Chai Guosheng failed to go to junior high school and stayed in the junior high school class run by the primary school for three years. At the age of 17, Chai Guosheng, who graduated from junior high school, encountered a good opportunity to avoid the pain of going to the countryside and to become a worker in the local light bulb factory.

Chai Guosheng, who is good at learning, quickly learned how to make bulbs and vacuum technology when working in the workshop. In 1975, in the fourth year of the restoration of the recommendation system for workers, peasants and soldiers, the most diligent and capable learning ability of the whole school, Chai Guosheng, was recommended to the Department of Optics of Fudan University.

When Chai Guosheng first entered the university, the whole person was paralyzed, and the cultural foundation was too bad, which led to the beginning of listening to the lectures. However, Chai Guosheng refused to accept the loss and spent three years studying the 9-year course from junior high school to university. In Chai Guosheng’s own words, the goal at that time was “Don’t want to waste time, don’t want to waste life, don’t want to be worse than others”. When he graduated, he has become the best student in the class.

After graduating from college in 1978, Chai Guosheng chose the postgraduate entrance examination. He became the first in the class with an average score of 56 points. However, the score of 60 points was still stuck outside the graduate school.

After the failure of the postgraduate entrance examination, Chai Guosheng returned to his hometown. At that time, there were two choices in front of him. One was to go to Yunnan University as a teacher, and the other was to go to the light bulb factory that worked in the same year as a technician. "Because I grew up in a teacher's family, I was not interested in the teacher's line and chose to go to the light bulb factory."

The choice at that time determined the life path of Chai Guosheng for a lifetime.

a bowl of porridge everyone drinking

At the beginning, it was extremely difficult. To what extent, it was necessary to put the rusted screws in the kerosene and use them for a few days. I dare not waste a little because there is no money.

In 1990, Chai Guosheng left the state-owned enterprise that he had stayed for 12 years and started to start business in the sea.

When I recalled that period of history again, Chai Guosheng was impressed: "There were two things that had a great impact on me at the time. The first thing was that I read the "China on the mountain" written by He Bochuan, who was a smash hit at the time. "This book profoundly reveals China's economic model and future expected development model. The second thing is that when we went to Europe to study energy-saving lamps in 1990, we went to the UK first, then went to the Czech Republic, the prosperous market economy and The backward planned economy gave me a lot of shock, so I saw that the company at that time could not let me realize my dream."

After the end of the European study, Chai Guosheng, then a factory engineer, believed that it was not possible to simply introduce foreign advanced equipment, but to follow the development model of China's own development, and this was the case with the director who insisted on introducing foreign equipment. Great disagreement, this event finally gave Chai Guosheng the determination to resign.

After resigning, Chai Guosheng thought twice and chose Guangdong as his own entrepreneurial base, because at that time he was familiar with the Guangdong market and saw the importance of Guangdong as the most advanced position in China's economic development.

After arriving in Nanhai District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province, Chai Guosheng did not immediately invest in entrepreneurship, but entered a lighting factory. After ten months of "latching", Chai Guosheng basically figured out the characteristics of related enterprises.

In 1992, after everything was ready, Chai Guosheng and his friends partnered to set up Huaxing Optoelectronics (the predecessor of Shelley). All the assets are only a few hundred thousand. Chai Guosheng said, "At that time, I wished that I would use every money for two."

Personal charm is a very mysterious thing. It is unclear and unclear. It is expressed in Chai Guosheng. At the beginning of the venture, he can use his personal charm to bring old and old colleagues to his subordinates from the stable state-owned enterprises. Work hard to work for an uncertain future. "There were about seven or eight backbones at the time, and later, there were about a dozen people."

"I will tell them that the international song sings 'There is no savior, nor the god emperor, to create happiness depends on ourselves!' I can't guarantee that everyone will be able to return home in the future, but I can guarantee that there is only one bowl of rice. I will also make porridge and drink it for everyone."

Under the spur of this unsuccessful spirit, everyone has become an overtime mad, working hours counted in a dozen hours a day, fighting for the same goal, making Huaxing Optoelectronics only used for three or four years. Time has stabilized in Guangdong.

Recalling the hard times in the early days of the venture, Chai Guosheng not only felt a lot of emotions: "At the beginning, it was extremely difficult, and to what extent, it was necessary to put the rusty screws in the kerosene and soak them for a few days. I dare not waste a little bit because there is no money." In the case of such a tight collapse of the capital chain, Chai Guosheng still insisted on paying wages on time. "I only have one salary arrears, and that was because of the first few wages." Days, our safe was smashed, and the wages put in it were also stolen."

"There was another time, and the impression was very profound. In 1993, the company had just been founded for one year, there was no transportation equipment, and only one manpower tricycle served as the company's purchase car. At that time, Foshan city has banned riding a human tricycle, but we No way, usually only secretly transported. But once it was stopped by the traffic police at the entrance of Zumiao Street, what should I do? Everyone had to unload the purchased items and re-think the way back to the company."

This kind of hardship has been going on for several years, and an occasional opportunity has made Huaxing stand out. In 1997, Chai Guosheng found him at the Fudan University teacher. The teacher accepted a key project in the country and needed technical experiments to carry out project cooperation. They found a circle in China, including many large enterprises, but Can not find a suitable, and finally found Huaxing Optoelectronics, at this time, Huaxing Optoelectronics has been far ahead of other peers in the energy-saving lamp industry.

Finally, “Hua Xing” and Fudan University have cooperated successfully to study the “Energy Saving Light Failure Mechanism Research”, so that the quality of energy-saving lamps has reached the international advanced level. Huaxing took the lead in adopting the energy-saving lamps produced by the new process of coating water-protecting powder coating. The average life expectancy is over 8,000 hours, the 2000-hour pass-through maintenance rate is over 85%, and the technical indicators have reached the international advanced level. The project won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education in 1999 and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2004.
After 1998, Huaxing Optoelectronics realized two major innovations in the "compact high-efficiency energy-saving lamps": First, high-power, created more than 65 watts of energy-saving lamps, breaking through the restricted area where energy-saving lamps have no high power; second, to be smaller Direction development, 3 watts, 5 watts of family type, to guide the industry trend. These two breakthroughs have enabled Huaxing Optoelectronics to establish its leading position in the field of electric light sources.

Chai Guosheng said that Snow Wright can achieve today's results and completely seized two opportunities. One is the great opportunity brought by Deng Xiaoping's southern tour in 1992, and the other is the high-speed development period of energy-saving lamps.

Chai Guosheng’s wish is to “become the best and world-class lighting company in China.” In 2003, an internationally advanced car Xenon metal halide lamp was introduced and put into production. In 2004, key breakthrough projects in key areas of Guangdong and Hong Kong were “ The development and industrialization of new automotive Xenon metal halide lamps and LED taillights have won the bid in the bidding, and have now become the second pillar of the company after the energy-saving lamps.

Warming up from the group to the merits

From September 2007 to August 2009, the first domestic lawsuit triggered by the equity incentives of listed companies caused market attention, which took two years and went from the district court to the Supreme People's Court. The original defendant of the lawsuit was Chai Guosheng, Chairman of Shelley, and Li Zhenghui, former director and deputy general manager.

At the end of 2002 and July 2004, Chai Guosheng twice donated 380,000 shares and 630,000 shares of the company to Li Zhenghui, then the deputy general manager of the company. The two parties also agreed that Li Zhenghui should at least serve the company from accepting shares. If it is over 5 years, if it withdraws halfway, it will take back this part of the equity and recover economic compensation.

However, Li Zhenghui did not fulfill his promise. Instead, he resigned from the company as a director and deputy general manager on August 25, 2007. Shellett then held the fifteenth meeting of the first board of directors, approved the resignation application, and the lawsuit was triggered.

Xue Wright sued Li Zhenghui, recovering 5.22 million shares and demanding compensation for a loss of 19.29 million. Then Li Zhenghui sued the Snowlight board of directors in the Nanhai District Court of Foshan for illegal resolution. After the court opened the court twice, he withdrew the lawsuit; Xue Laite then sued Li Zhenghui Abuse of the right to appeal has had a negative impact on the company; Li Zhenghui again sued Snow Wright for financial compensation and director allowance...

On August 19, 2009, the Supreme People's Court finally concluded the marathon lawsuit: Li Zhenghui compensated Chai Guosheng for the economic loss of RMB 19.928 million (based on the 0.7% stake in Shelley on August 28, 2007). A total of 348,300 shares of Shelley will also be refunded. Both parties have no objection to the verdict.

In the interview, Chai Guosheng was very sceptical about the lawsuit and clearly stated that "you should not always ask questions that I don't want to say", but through this sensational lawsuit, we can find a significant change in Chai Guosheng's management.

Chai Guosheng said that including Li Zhenghui, he had donated more than 20 employees. The Financial Weekly reporter found that at the beginning of the listing of Shell Wright in 2006, there were 21 natural person shareholders, and by the third quarter of 2009, many of them had disappeared.
Chai Guosheng told the Financial Weekly reporter: "The minority shareholders who donated the shares at the time are mostly not in the company because their management ideas and ideas have been unable to keep up with the current development of Shell. The company introduced it when it started its second business. More passionate college students and young cadres."

In the interview, Chai Guosheng constantly repeated and emphasized the two words "institution." He believes that during the second venture and transformation, Shelley was mainly the establishment of modern enterprise management system, the improvement of corporate governance, the establishment of modern enterprise operation mechanism, the establishment of professional manager system, the establishment of various systems and Improvement has made the development of Shelley more modern and professional.

Chai Guosheng told the Financial Weekly reporter that he hoped that the modern management and operation mechanisms would help him escape the "swamplands" of these equity disputes. The improvement of the system also allowed Chai Guosheng to step out of the mindset of the Yunnan-based employees. “It used to be a group of people in Yunnan. At that time, there was no way. Because there were few people, small groupism may be more conducive to the development of a small enterprise. But when the enterprise has moved to normal operation, the principle of meritocracy is a principle that must be adhered to. Must break the small groupism."

Chai Guosheng, who abandoned the traditional concept of "subsidiary father", has shown an astonishing degree in the issue of the familyization of traditional Chinese private enterprises. "Snow Wright is my business. My son doesn't like to do this. I don't have to force him. He has his own career in Beijing. I won't interfere with him." Chai Guosheng said faintly. "In the future, I may resign as the chairman and only be a shareholder. Now the professional manager team is very professional to take care of the company, I am very relieved."
