Philips, the Dutch lighting giant, plans to close Philips Canlyte, a lighting manufacturer based in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. The plant was put into production in 1987 and originally belonged to the Canlyte brand under Genlyte Group, a Canadian lighting manufacturer. In 2008, after the acquisition of Genlyte Group by Philips, the factory was renamed Philips Canlyte.

The Philips Canlyte plant will be officially closed in March 2015. Prior to this, the factory will gradually cease production of incandescent lamps and will transfer the production of LED lamps to other plants located in North America.
It is expected that there will be 190 employees affected by this withdrawal. Philips spokesperson Santina Giuliano said that the company is currently informing staff of the relevant compensation agreement.
Philips said that with more and more companies and industries involved in the production of LED lamps, changes in market demand is the reason for this withdrawal.
