Dow Chemical started construction of a new trimethylgallium (TMG) plant in Tianan, South Korea

Dow Electronic Materials, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Co., the US chemical industry leader, announced that its new plant for Trimethylgallium (TMG) in Cheonan, South Korea, has started construction and is expected to be commissioned in early 2011.

Trimethylgallium is a precursor to organometallic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and is extremely important for the production of LEDs and other compound semiconductor components.

Dow Electronic Materials pointed out that the new plant in Cheonan, Korea, was part of a phased expansion plan announced in June 2010. This overall expansion plan is expected to increase production capacity by 60 tons per year. The capacity expansion plan of the existing US plant area is in progress, and new capacity will be released from the end of 2010 to 2011.

Dow Electronic Materials currently produces trimethyl gallium and other organometallic precursors in North Andover, MA, and the packaging work is carried out in North Andover and Taoyuan, Taiwan. Dow Corning Corp., a joint venture between Dow Chemical and liquid crystal glass substrates and fiber optic giant Corning, has a special plant for LED silica gel in Jincheon, South Korea.
