This decision of the EU will affect the development of 5G

Electronic enthusiasts eight o'clock: Beijing time on April 24 evening news, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy and other 15 EU member states recently expressed opposition to the European Commission's proposal to extend the spectrum license period to a minimum of 25 years.

In order to create a single European telecommunications market, the European Commission proposes to extend the telecommunications spectrum license renewal period to a minimum of 25 years, with the aim of increasing the operator's investment certainty. At present, licenses in different markets in Europe have different validity periods, but they are mostly between 10 and 15 years.

Over the years, the European Commission has been trying to coordinate the way in which member governments allocate spectrum blocks to mobile operators in an attempt to establish a unified European telecommunications market. However, the competent authorities of member states are reluctant to give up the auction control of the wireless spectrum. Spectrum auctions allow the government to raise billions of euros in funding.

The joint signature against the EU has 15 members, namely Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The 15 member states stated in a statement of opinion that “the mandatory authorization period is not appropriate and cannot provide flexible feedback on the development of the market. The long authorization period is not conducive to market innovation.”

Steven Tas, president of the European Telecommunications Network Operators Association (ETNO), believes that "maintaining the current authorization status is not a good option. The launch of 5G requires a longer spectrum license period."

Telecom operators see the coordinated EU telecommunications policy as an effective means of pushing Europe to the forefront of launching the next generation of mobile broadband, 5G. 5G will support a variety of innovative services such as autonomous vehicles, telemedicine, and billions of everyday devices connected to the Internet.

The EU has made the early development of 5G mobile communication technology a top priority, and expects 5G to bring 146 billion euros ($159 billion) in revenue to the region each year.
