Power shortage of 70 million kw in 2013 CEC calls for the development of hydropower

The “electricity shortage” in 2011 will continue. Relevant sources predict that by 2013, the electricity gap in China will reach 70 million kilowatts.

Wei Zhaofeng, full-time vice chairman of the China Electricity Council, made the above statement at the “China Energy Senior Dialogue” forum on the 12th. He generally predicted that during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the situation of China's electricity shortage will be more serious than the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”. By 2012, the electricity gap will reach 50 million kilowatts, and by 2013 it will increase to 70 million kilowatts.

The six-month power operation report released by CEC on the 11th shows that during the summer peak season this year, the supply and demand gaps of power grids in East China, North China, Central China and South China totaled 30 to 40 million kilowatts. Winter electricity supply will be more extensive.

Wei Zhaofeng said that CEC has already completed the “12th Five-Year Plan” research report for power supply. Its main viewpoints are: First, it is necessary to give priority to the development of hydropower; Second, to optimize the development of coal-fired power; Third, to actively develop wind power and solar power; Fourth, Safe and efficient development of nuclear power; Fifth, speed up the construction of the power grid; Sixth, actively promote energy-saving emission reduction.

Wei Zhaofeng believes that the energy allocation for China's power development is excessively dependent on coal. As coal prices continue to rise, under the “planned power market coal” system, thermal power companies have suffered large losses and their power generation enthusiasm has been severely frustrated. In addition, the cross-regional transmission capacity of the power grid is insufficient, resulting in the difficulty of effectively supporting North China and Northeast China power grids in areas where the Northeast and Northwest Grids are concentrated.
