Low frequency finally broke through vivo X7Plus audio special evaluation

The vivo X7Plus has been released for a while, whether it is performance, self-timer, life, or Hi-Fi mentioned today is its main function. Before we have seen the special evaluation of its endurance section, today we talk about the Hi-Fi part experience. Since vivo X1, vivo X, Xshot and Xplay mobile phones have basically used Hi-Fi chips, and audio solutions have been cooperating with chip vendors such as Cirrus Logic, Ti, ESS, and AKM. In the Hi-Fi 1.0 era, Vivo acquired the ES9018K2M decoder chip and the OPA2604 op amp chip vivo Xplay3S. In the Hi-Fi 2.0 era, in addition to the ES9018K2M, the vivo X5Max introduced a second-stage amplification scheme: the first-stage op amp SABRE ES9601 and the second-stage op amp OPA1612. At the same time, YAMAHA YSS-205X digital surround sound signal processing chip was introduced to implement a portable karaoke experience.

In the era of Hi-Fi 3.0, the vivo Xplay5 flagship first enhanced the two-stage amplifier circuit, introduced three OPA1612s, and then used two ES9028 DACs to perform independent audio decoding on the left and right channels, respectively. So what will be a new attempt for Vivo after Hi-Fi 3.0? In 16 years, with the ES9118 and SABRE9018Q2C these integrated DAC chip DAC emerged. The mobile phone industry began to discover that this Hi-Fi solution can save more space in the body than the previous independent DAC solution. At the same time, the DAC that incorporates the op-amp chip has not reduced its decoding and amplification signal effects.

The AK4376 above the vivo X7Plus is the DAC that integrates the op amp chip. Why did you choose AKM instead of the old ESS chip? Taking a look at vivo's Hi-Fi solution for several generations of X-series phones, the vivo X5ProV, vivo X6 and vivo X6S all use the AK4375. Therefore, it is necessary to control AKM's new Hi-Fi solution vivo has accumulated some experience.


Difference between AK4375 and AK4376

Is the AK4375 the predecessor of the AK4376, which is an upgraded version of the former? Not so simple. Let's take a look at the following chip parameter comparison:

In a previous popular science article, the author has already divided the mobile phone decoder chip into three categories: an independent DAC, a DAC that integrates an op amp chip, and codec. Readers who do not understand these three concepts can review the article. Among them, AK4490 and AK4375 belong to the independent DAC, AK4376 belongs to the DAC that integrated the op amp chip, and AK4961 is the codec.

AK4961: This codec also integrates ADCs, DACs, and Class G amplifiers. Zhongxing Tianji 7 and nubia Z7 and nubia Z9 all use this chip. The key audio indicator is similar to the AK4375.

AK4490: PCM and DSD-encoded audio files can be hard-coded by this DAC, one of which is the Hi-Fi chip of ZTE. In the horizontal comparison of the above four chips, the total harmonic distortion of the AK4490 is the lowest, and the best single item is achieved.

AK4375: The key audio indicator is similar to the AK4961, but it is only responsible for the DAC function and cannot operate independently. This independent DAC is used in many nubia and vivo phones. Unfortunately, this chip does not support DSD-encoded audio.

AK4376: The total harmonic distortion and signal-to-noise ratio have been greatly improved compared to the AK4375, and the signal-to-noise ratio is also the highest among the four chips. Compared to the AK4375, the G-type op amp chip is integrated to increase the sampling speed to 384 kHz.

So how does the performance of the AK4376 hard index compare to similar chips from ESS and Cirrus Logic?

In particular, the red background indicates that the three DACs integrate the op amp chip. We also introduced another three independent DACs often used by vivo for Hengping. From the above table, the maximum gap between the AK4376 and the other five DACs is shown in total harmonic distortion.

The above test results include horizontal comparisons of vivo Xplay5 standard, vivo Xshot, and vivo X6Plus. The overall performance of vivo X7 Plus is similar to that of vivo X6 Plus, but not to vivo Xshot and vivo Xplay5. It's warmer, especially when compared to the vivo Xshot. I prefer the latter, but many consumers should prefer cold performance.

The dynamic range of vivo X7Plus is not wide. Let's take the example of Tsai Chin's sister's ferry:

The treble part was suppressed, and the midrange and bass parts were not prominent. Fortunately, the vocal tone was more pronounced when singing to "pull out." The overall dynamic range was not as rich as previous models that used ESS and Cirrus Logic decoding chip solutions. . Although the vocal part was relatively mediocre, the details of the background beat the drums sounded in place to capture the ear nerves.

Vivo X7Plus has enhanced the performance of bass compared to previous vivo phones, resulting in a good chemical reaction, perhaps thanks to the AK4376 integrated amp module. Whether it is All About That Bass and the California hotel Bass, some of the low-frequency sense, or drum drum drums are more focused on the ears, there is a knock inside feeling. The drum poetry also has a certain ability to dive.

The low-frequency performance was excellent, but the tuning of the mid-high frequency was a bit more boiled. Although the vocals were still quite resistant, it was a step backwards from the vivo Xplay5 standard version and vivo Xshot. In the guzheng and the flute, there was no break in the tracks, and the control was good, but they could obviously feel suppressed at high frequencies.

Responsiveness is better than that of vivo Xplay5 Standard Edition. The latter performed better at One I Love and Ferry, while vivo X7Plus performed better at A Thunsand Years.

I previously heard that vivo emphasized the performance of the low-frequency part on the two flagships of the vivo Xplay5 series, but in the end it did not clearly feel the difference with the previous models. Until the vivo X7Plus, we waited for a long-lost low-frequency sense and potential, demonstrating that vivo has begun to cater to the mainstream tastes of the people. Of course, the price is to let the performance of the high-frequency decline, but with the further cooperation of AKM and vivo, the future should be able to solve these problems.

The vivo Xplay5 Standard Edition symbolizes the culmination of many years of cooperation between vivo and Cirrus Logic platform. The potential of CS4398 has been basically exhausted. The vivo Xplay5 flagship of dual DACs and three op-amp chips is much better than the vivo X6Plus when ES9028 was used for the first time, and it has been more carefully adjusted, but there is still room for improvement. Compared to Cirrus Logic and ESS, AKM and vivo have a slightly shorter collaboration time, and there are not many great products, but the vivo X7 Plus is a remarkable work. Remember that the vivo X6's Hi-Fi switch was not able to be turned on and off manually. It can be seen that the tuning was not mature at the time. After testing several products, it came to the vivo X7Plus AK4376 platform, not only supports CUE selection and manual turn on/off Hi-Fi mode, but also pass common lossless audio formats other than DSD encoding, for uncommon 44.1kHz The 32-bit WAV format track and the 192-kHz/24-bit sample rate track also work well.

As shown in the above table, combined with the full-text experimental results, compared to the AK4375 of the independent DAC, the AK4376 integrated with the amp is obviously not only an upgraded version, but also a simple one. The decoding capability, audio format compatibility, and sound quality performance have obviously risen by a notch. Of course, depending on three different Hi-Fi platforms from vivo, the ESS and Cirrus Logic platforms still have advantages. However, as AKM and vivo cooperate longer, this gap can be shortened.
