Locked in dual-core Android 4.0 smart TV chip vendor

Dual-core smart TV (Smart TV) chips will be out of the cage. Following the first Android 4.0 smart TV dual-core system-on-a-chip (SoC) in the morning star industry, other TV main chip developers have also started to follow up. Among them, SiS has already expected to release the first dual-core solution in the first quarter of next year. It will be introduced into mass production in the second quarter, with a view to enhancing business performance and video encoding and decoding capabilities to seize business opportunities in the smart TV market.

Li Minhan, the second director of the first marketing department of SiS technology marketing business

Li Minhan, second director of technology marketing at SiS Technology Marketing, said that local TV brands in mainland China, Taiwan, Australia and India will compete for Android 4.0 smart TVs from the end of this year, injecting new growth momentum into the market. Since the Android 4.0 operating system supports at least 1GB of defined memory and stricter requirements for graphics processor (GPU) specifications, chipmakers are encouraged to develop dual-core central processing units (CPUs) and dual-core GPU solutions to boost the clock to 1 ~ 2GHz, strengthen the performance of software and hardware cooperative operation.

After Morningstar won the favor of TCL and other mainland Chinese companies with its Android 4.0 smart TV dual-core SoC, chip makers such as SiS, Novatek, Realtek and STMicroelectronics (ST) are scrambling for brand factory orders and are accelerating R & D And it is expected to complete the lineup of dual-core chips in 2013.

Li Minhan pointed out that as TV brands continue to upgrade their products to Android 4.0, and are dedicated to deploying exclusive user interfaces and cloud services, the system will increase in complexity and consume more processor performance. It is expected that from 2013, the 1GHz dual-core SoC will become the standard for smart TVs, and even some high-end models will introduce naked-eye 3D, 4K & TImes; 2K panels or voice, somatosensory human-machine interfaces, show differentiated features, and will accelerate the emergence of four-core solutions Time schedule.

Li Minhan emphasized that next year Si Si's new dual-core SoC will not only support Android 4.0, but also can enhance the naked-eye 3D and high-resolution panel image processing through an external frame rate conversion (FRC) chip. At the same time, it will also improve the chip firmware control function and force the global digital TV standard common platform to comply with European digital video broadcasting (DVB), American Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) and Japan Integrated Digital Service Broadcast (ISDB) and other specifications, Help customers tailor products according to different regional market needs.

It is understood that SiS has gained a lot in the smart TV market this year. Its Android 2.2 smart TV SoC, SiS 691, has successfully entered the supply chain of TV brands such as BenQ in Taiwan, Soniq in Australia and BOE in Mainland China. In addition to the aforementioned manufacturers, LCD TV manufacturers including Chimei, Helian, etc. have also actively approached SiS to set up a next-generation Android 4.0 smart TV cooperative development plan.

On the other hand, after the merger of Morningstar and MediaTek, the overall TV chip market ecology will not be affected. Although Morningstar ’s leading position will be more difficult to shake, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean brand factories have begun to seek chips for price negotiation. The second source of supply is to allow other TV chip manufacturers that originally had a small gap in the market to aim at this wave-to-single effect and to strengthen the momentum of development.

Li Minhan revealed that among the Japanese TV brands that previously used Morningstar and MediaTek chips, some companies have moved closer to SiS and the rest of the chip vendors to develop a cooperation plan for Android smart TVs. However, it is still at an early stage of development, so the turn-to-order effect will not be immediate, and it is estimated that it will take 1 to 2 years before the market share of TV chip vendors will change significantly.
