LED standard development into the fast lane

The centralized review of LED standards is a major event in the lighting industry this year. In a total of 19 submission criteria, the Working Group of LED Lighting Technology Standards of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has undertaken research and formulation of seven standards, involving LED chips, devices, modules, components and other aspects. Recently, the reporter interviewed Zhao Ying, secretary general of the standard working group and senior engineer of China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, and asked her to elaborate on the development of standards.
Reporter: Please briefly introduce the ideas and overall structure of the standard formulation.

Zhao Ying: Since its establishment in 2005, the LED Lighting Technology Standards Working Group has been responsible for the formulation of relevant standards. The standard working group has 57 members, covering all areas of chip production, device packaging, phosphor preparation and application product manufacturing in the industrial chain.

The overall idea of our standard setting is based on the upper, middle and lower reaches of the product in the industry chain, divided into four "sub-areas": "Sub-area 1" mainly includes various materials and raw materials, epitaxial films, etc.; Field 2" includes chips, devices, modules/components, and LED driver circuits and control circuits in the middle of the industry chain; "Sub-area 3" mainly relates to LED application products; manufacturing, testing, and testing equipment are referred to as "sub-area 4". Each sub-standard system is constructed according to its characteristics from five categories: "basic standards", "product standards", "process technology standards", "safety standards", and "management standards".

Reporter: What are the sub-areas of the seven standards approved by the working group this year? What are the specific criteria? What are the breakthroughs before?

Zhao Ying: So far, the working group has formulated 9 industry standards. Last year, two standards have been approved for approval. There are 7 standards for approval this year. These standards are mainly concentrated in the middle and upper reaches of the LED industry, including: semiconductor optoelectronic devices power LED blank detail specification, semiconductor light-emitting diode test method (revised SJ/T2355.1-7: 1983 semiconductor light-emitting device test method), semiconductor lighting terminology, Sapphire substrate for GaN-based light-emitting diodes, phosphor for semiconductor light-emitting diodes, technical specifications for power semiconductor light-emitting diode chips, test methods for semiconductor light-emitting diode chips, blank detail specifications for small-power LEDs for semiconductor optoelectronic devices, and series of semiconductor light-emitting diodes Spectrum. The formulation of these nine standards has played a major role in improving the standard system of semiconductor lighting "sub-area 2" and has played a certain role in regulating the market.

These nine standards are all self-developed and have made breakthroughs in some areas. For example, in the "phosphor for semiconductor light-emitting diodes" standard, "external quantum efficiency" was used instead of "relative brightness" as an evaluation index for evaluating the luminous efficiency of phosphors, and a test method for "external quantum efficiency" was developed. This simplifies the powder selection work during the test, and solves the problem that the phosphor luminous efficiency test which has been existing for a long time is difficult.

Reporter: LED has been used in many fields, but the application in the field of lighting began in the past two years. So what is the difference between the development of LED standards for lighting and the focus of other standards?

Zhao Ying: LED has been used in the field of display and indication before, but it has different emphasis on the standard of lighting. LEDs are used to indicate and display the main evaluation indicators are wavelengths, for lighting, color coordinates, color temperature and so on. In the past, low-power devices did not require high heat dissipation. However, with the changes in market demand, high-power devices are gradually being used. The heat dissipation directly affects the life of the products. Therefore, the heat dissipation is tested and the heat is dissipated. Design, power consumption, energy efficiency, etc. are assessed, these are the focus of lighting LED standards.

In addition, due to the particularity of LEDs, its standard setting and other lighting products are also different. For example, the evaluation method of LED life is different from ordinary lighting. At present, we are trying to use the accelerated life test method to calculate the extrapolated life through data accumulation under certain stress conditions. In short, the development of lighting LED standards is still very different from the previous standards development work.

Reporter: We know that standard setting is a very complicated process. What difficulties and problems have you encountered during this period?

Zhao Ying: Due to the long industrial chain of LED and its application products, the product characteristics vary greatly. The level, form, classification and structure of the standard are very different. There are many departments involved, and the standardization work subjects are scattered. Therefore, the standard formulation should fully consider the overall industrial chain. In the situation, we must also consider the connection between the upstream and downstream, and the coordination between departments.

In the past one or two years, the formulation of standards has become a hot spot in the LED industry. The standardization work has been diversified. Under the situation of "hundred flowers and flowers", it also brings some drawbacks, and it is easy to have contradictions, conflicts and duplication. Therefore, we also hope to communicate with relevant departments to make the formulation of standards more scientific and perfect. All departments and standardization organizations should have clear division and coordination, and focus on manufacturing, application, monitoring and certification.

Reporter: In addition to the nine standards that have been approved, what work is the working group doing now? What standards are expected to be approved in the future?

Zhao Ying: We are currently paying attention to the life test methods of semiconductor light-emitting diodes, the energy efficiency of semiconductor lighting and the radiation safety research of LEDs. These studies have achieved certain results.

The national standards to be declared in 2009 are generally as follows: LED module test method, LED light radiation safety requirements and evaluation methods, LED phosphor test methods - optical performance, LED phosphor test method - physical properties, LED accelerated life test method, LED performance specification for backlight, backlight assembly for liquid crystal display Part 3-1: Blank detail specification for LED backlight component for portable display.

In addition, this year, it is expected to report the electronic industry standards for small power chip specifications, epitaxial film performance specifications, epitaxial wafer test methods, and LED model naming rules. At present, the development of LED standards has entered a stage of rapid development. It is believed that the successive introduction of standards will promote the sound development of the industry.
