Apple's smart home development has been lagging Amazon, Google

Apple has joined smart home industry group "The Thread Group," the technology group behind the Thread Protocol.

It is understood that Thread is a new network mesh standard, an IPv6-based technology, used to create a mesh network in IoT devices, allowing hundreds of devices to connect to each other securely and reliably, and no longer so on and off, making it easier to collaborate.

For Apple's addition, IHS analyst Lee Ratliff (Lee Ratliff) said that behind this behavior is that Apple is "renewing or increasing efforts in HomeKit."

It is reported that in addition to Apple, including Google, Amazon, etc. are already a member of the organization, or products already support Thread. Ratliff further noted that Apple's joining the group could mark a "convergence" of various smart home platforms.

As we all know, when it comes to the status quo of smart homes, "separate management" is the most obvious feature, which is also a drawback that has been criticized by everyone.

For Apple, joining the group will make its HomeKit network more efficient and powerful, and device makers will be able to integrate HomeKit technology supporters more easily than before. This means that HomeKit's device lineup will gradually expand, which will strengthen its competitiveness in the smart home market.

In the past, due to the high threshold for security verification of the Apple interface, it not only created difficulties for device manufacturers to access, but also increased the cost of accessing devices. Under various factors, Apple's smart home development has been lagging behind Amazon, Google and so on.

Obviously, Apple is also aware of this problem. Since last year, Apple has gradually lowered the development threshold, allowing any registered developers to join, so that more people can try and participate in the development of HomeKit accessories.

We don't yet know the extent of Apple's involvement in the group, but it's safe to say that joining the group isn't a bad thing.
