VC-funded lithium battery company Amprius has now launched a series of batteries that are 25% longer than current market products and can be used for mobile phones and tablets. The investors behind it include Google's Eric Schmidt, VantagePoint Venture and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
Amprius was founded in 2008 and originally originated from a battery research project in Stanford. In its lithium-ion battery released on Tuesday, a nanostructured silicon material was used as the positive electrode.
Here's the popular science: The battery consists of a positive electrode at one end and a negative electrode at the other end, and the electrolyte is filled between the two electrodes. Amprius's nano-architecture materials allow the positive electrode to react more chemically and release more electrical energy.
The energy density of a battery is the energy that a unit volume of battery can release. Amprius said its first-generation battery can release 0.58-0.6 kWh of energy (battery capacity is calculated in terms of 1 liter), while the next-generation battery will increase to 0.65-0.7 kWh. Ordinary lithium battery intelligence reaches 0.4 kWh or so.
In addition to increasing energy density, one of the challenges they face is how to make silicon materials more stable—in favor of recharging. Amprius said that at present, their batteries can be charged and discharged 500 times while the full charge is not less than 80%.
At present, Amprius's battery is also supplied to some unknown mobile phone or tablet OEM, and in cooperation with OEM design for consumer electronics products. The next generation of products is planned to be produced later this year.
