Maxim Introduces MAX8830 LED Lighting Management IC

Maxim introduces the MAX8830 LED lighting management IC in a miniature, 2.5mm x 2.5mm UCSPTM. The device integrates a DC-DC boost converter and four current regulators for display backlights, a camera flash current regulator, and all power switches, reducing the overall solution size, reducing external component count and design time. The MAX8830's high efficiency (> 90%), flexible operating mode, and tiny package make it ideal for cellular handsets, wireless PDAs, and smart phones.

The MAX8830 eliminates the need for a separate control IC and features four 10mA current regulators for LED drivers for display backlighting or indicator applications. LED brightness can be independently adjusted by 32 levels through the I2C interface. The ultra-low dropout voltage (30mV, typ) allows the boost DC-DC voltage to be set to the lowest possible voltage based on the selected LED, increasing system efficiency.

The MAX8830 also integrates a low dropout (75mV, typ) 200mA flash current regulator that allows the user to independently program 16 levels of movie and flash modes via the I2C interface. The programmable flash safety timer prevents finger burns or LED damage caused by the flash being turned on for a long time. The camera module can directly control the flash mode with simple logic pins, while the film mode can be enabled via logic control or I2C interface, thus providing maximum system design flexibility.

To increase efficiency and further reduce component count, the 280mA boost converter integrates both switching MOSFETs and rectifiers. The MAX8830's 1MHz switching frequency allows the use of a minimum of 2μH. For added flexibility, the MAX8830 also features an I2C-compatible interface that allows the output voltage to be programmed from 3.8V to 5.2V in steps of 100mV. This makes the MAX8830 ideal for lighting management applications and for powering other circuits such as audio amplifiers.

The MAX8830 automatically detects open and shorted LEDs and can read this status via the I2C interface, making it easy to use in automated factory testing. Other features include overcurrent protection for the DC-DC converter, overtemperature protection, and operation over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. The MAX8830 is available in a lead-free, 16-bump, 2.5mm x 2.5mm x 0.7mm UCSP package. The chip starts at $2.50 (2500 tablets, FOB USA).

Anisotropic Ferrite Magnets

Anisotropic magnets are magnets whose magnetization directions in the magnets are aligned in a certain direction.

Magnet powder for anisotropic magnets is composed of a single crystal or polycrystal with an aligned direction of magnetization in one magnet particle. When a magnetic field is applied externally during molding (this magnetic field is called an aligning magnetic field), the magnet powder moves to align with the direction of the magnetic field and is solidified in an aligned state, resulting in an anisotropic magnet. Magnet powder aligned with an aligning magnetic field is solidified with keeping magnetization. Therefore, after removing the alignment magnetic field, the molded body becomes a magnet having a magnetic force.
